Where It Is

Playa Barrigona sits on the Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula, tucked between Sámara and Carrillo. It is one of those beaches that stayed under the radar largely because getting there takes intent — there is no strip of restaurants, no line of vendors, and on most days very few people. The hacienda sits inside Costa Rica’s Nicoya Blue Zone, one of five regions worldwide studied for unusual longevity.

The Property

The estate is made up of three separate villas totalling twelve bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. You can book a single villa or take the whole property.

  • Casa Barrigona — seven bedrooms, the largest of the three. Built for extended families or groups travelling together.
  • Casa Guanacaste — three bedrooms. The middle option, suited to a family or a small group.
  • Casa Dorada — two bedrooms. The most intimate of the three, and the one we stayed in.

Whole-property rental starts at $3,495 per night for up to 20 overnight guests at the time of writing, with additional guests charged per person up to 30. Rates change, so confirm current pricing directly.

How It Works

This is a self-catering property. Every house has a full kitchen, and there is no restaurant on site. That suits some groups perfectly and frustrates others, so it is worth being clear about before you book — if you want meals handled, that needs arranging separately, and we can help with private chefs.

The architecture leans into the setting rather than fighting it: high ceilings, wide covered terraces, native hardwood and stone. Central courtyards and outdoor living areas do most of the work, which is the right call in this climate.

The Beach and the Trails

The reason to come here is the access. Trails run from the property through the forest directly down to Playa Barrigona, and more hiking routes start at the door. Guided walks with local naturalists are available, which is genuinely worth doing — the wildlife on this stretch of the peninsula is easy to walk straight past if you do not know what you are looking at.
